History
History or First Baptist Church
1883 was an important year for the city of Snyder in many ways. Local merchant Pete Snyder would file a petition with the supreme court of Texas to have the settlement on Deep Creek, known as "Hide Town," named "Snyder." Latter that same year Bledsoe Baptist Church, was organized under the leadership of Elder John S. Bledsoe. Nearly 10 years later the name was changed to First Baptist Church. 125 years ago there was a vision for a "gospel church," as the early church minutes read, in Snyder. 125 years later the mission of First Baptist Church is Leading People to Know Christ and to Make Him Known. Making Christ known is essential to being and becoming a "gospel church."
After 4 sanctuaries, 35 pastors, thousands of members, millions of dollars, and immeasurable impact for the sake of the gospel, the members of First Baptist Church celebrate what God has been doing for the past 125 years. Throughout those years Snyder has seen significant change. This area that was once famous for thousands of buffalo, a white one in particular, then saw herds of cattle and the cowboys, ranches and windmills that come with them. Not long after the ranches were established did the farmers settle and turn the soil. And just when Snyder had established itself as an agricultural community, the oil boom hit. In one year population had quadrupled and Snyder was a "boom town." Change again was on the horizon when oil prices dropped and the focus shifted again back to agriculture. Recently we have witnessed oil prices rise and a new way to harvest the energy of the wind. The landscape of Snyder has been ever changing and is changing before our very eyes. First Baptist Church has endured those changes and grown with Snyder throughout the years. While we understand that life is constantly changing, we also understand the words of Isaiah 40:8, "The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of God stands forever." In a rapidly changing world where nothing seems to be constant, we hope First Baptist Church has offered to Snyder the unchanging love of God to all people.
Now more than ever, First Baptist Church is committed to make the unchanging love of God known to Snyder, Scurry County, Texas, America and the world. It is our genuine passion to see people come to know God's love though Jesus Christ and to make that love known. We invite you, as we celebrate 125 years as First Baptist Church in Snyder, to celebrate with us. We also want to say "Thank You" to the people of Snyder and Scurry County for your support through the years. Our hope is to continue to partner with the community to see the unchanging love of God made known to all people.
